“Pentacle”,1991, 6.5’x14’x14’, is comprised of five handbuilt ceramic standing stones with a sixth smaller ceramic stone in the center. I was inspired by the prehistoric stone circles built from 4,500 to 2,500 years ago, perhaps the most famous being Stonehenge in Wiltshire, England. Some theories suggest that its purpose was for burial or healing rituals.
This “stone” circle was made from clay, which is fine-grained sedimentary rock. The structures were handbuilt with wet clay in sections, then transformed by the fire of the kiln to become stone once again. In the center of the stone circle is a place to sit for rest, and, perhaps, quiet contemplation.
