Sunset, Wildlife Ponds
Chalk Pastels can be quite seductive in their possibilities for rich, intense colors. They can be blended and layered with relative ease compared to the transparent delicacy of painting with watercolors. There’s something so satisfying in using my hands to rub, blend, and smooth the colors one into the other.
The endless variations in the light and color of the sky and clouds as the sun rises and sets often stir feelings of wonder and joy in me. The artwork shown here was inspired by a particularly beautiful sunset over the wildlife ponds where I walk several times a week. The sunrises and sunsets are for me a reminder of the one constant in our lives - change.
This painting started out as a watercolor, but I was missing the feeling I was after. So, I layered on chalk pastels, blending and smoothing until I felt the image move me.
